Hi there,
If you’re gearing up for a winter PCS with your dog or cat, I completely understand how overwhelming it can feel. PCSing in the winter can feel like a frosty challenge, especially when you’re traveling with a dog or cat. Moving is tough enough, but throw in cold weather, icy roads, and a furry passenger, and things can get… interesting. Having been through it myself, I’ve learned a few tricks to make the process smoother—and warmer—for both you and your pet.
First, pack a pet essentials bag. Think of it as their personal PCS bag! I always include a few days’ worth of food, a water bottle, collapsible bowls, a blanket, and my pet’s favorite toy. For my dog, I also keep a leash handy, and for cat owners, don’t forget a travel litter box - no one likes a grumpy traveler!
When it’s time to hit the road, safety is key. Use a secure crate or pet seatbelt to prevent any mid-drive escapes or distractions. If the weather’s icy, check your car’s tires and pack an emergency kit—yes, your pet counts as part of the family!
And, winter-proof their gear. My dog loves the snow, but his paws? Not so much. I use paw balm to protect his pads from ice and salt, and he has a cozy jacket for colder climates. If you have a cat, a fleece blanket in their carrier goes a long way toward keeping them comfortable
Be ready for delays. Snowstorms can slow things down, so I always pack extra supplies, like food, treats. It’s better to have more than you think you’ll need! During pit stops, stretch those paws. Let dogs sniff around (on a leash, of course) and offer cats a safe space to relax in their carrier. Remember, not all rest areas are pet-friendly, so plan ahead for pet-friendly stops along your route.
Lastly, don’t forget to plan for the unexpected. Have your pet’s medical records, an ID tag with your current contact info, and a list of nearby vets just in case. I keep my dog’s vaccination records and emergency vet info in a folder in my car. Having that ready gives me peace of mind.
A winter PCS is definitely an adventure, but with the right prep, you and your pet will get through it together—and even make some great memories along the way.
