When it’s time for a PCS move, the first question on every pet owner’s mind is: “How do I get my pet to our new home?” Whether you’re loading up the car for a road trip or booking a flight, traveling with pets can be a big adventure. But should you hit the open road or soar through the skies? Let’s break it down!
Road Trip: The Scenic Route
A road trip with your pet might seem like the more relaxed option, and for many, it is - I know my dog loves driving much more than flying! Here’s why:
• Flexibility: You control the pace. Stop for bathroom breaks, stretch your pet’s legs, and give them a drink whenever needed.
• Comfort: Your pet stays with you the entire time, so they’re less stressed about being separated.
• Adventure: It’s like a mini-vacation for your pet, exploring new places along the way. Think of all the new scents they’ll encounter!
But be prepared: long drives can be tiring for both you and your pet. Ensure your furry friend has access to water, food, and plenty of breaks. A comfy crate or seatbelt harness can help keep them safe while you focus on the road.
If you’re heading to your new duty station fast, flying might be the quickest option. But flying with pets requires extra preparation:
• Crate Training: If your pet isn’t used to a crate, now’s the time to start getting them comfortable. Airlines have strict requirements for pet travel, so your pet will need to be in an airline-approved crate.
• Health & Paperwork: You’ll need updated health certificates and sometimes proof of vaccinations before flying. Be sure to contact your airline for all the specifics.
• Stress & Safety: Flying can be stressful for pets, especially in cargo. For those with smaller pets, traveling in the cabin is often a less stressful option.
Flying gets you to your new home quicker, but don’t forget the prep work! If your pet is used to being in a car for long hours, it could be the more comfortable option for them. My dog's first trip flying ended up being 3 different flights for one trip alone, not simple! Then later we PCSd to Japan…talk about a trip, 27 hours of traveling total before we got to Oki!
