A PCS move is a whirlwind any time of year, but there’s something about fall that makes it feel like everything is changing at once. The days get shorter, the air gets cooler, and suddenly you and your pets are adjusting not only to a new home, but a new rhythm of life.
For pets, routines are a source of comfort. Whether it’s mealtime, walk time, or the moment you curl up together at night, those little daily rituals tell them “all is well.” A PCS can throw those habits out of sync, but with a little planning (and a lot of patience), you can help your furry friend settle into their new life.
Start by re-establishing their feeding and bathroom schedules as quickly as possible in your new home. Even if you’re unpacking boxes or running errands, keeping their routine predictable will help ease anxiety.
Make time for familiar activities - play fetch in the yard, toss their favorite toy, or recreate a “snuggle spot” with blankets or beds from your old home. These familiar scents and textures are comforting reminders that home is wherever you are together.
If fall weather is a big change from your previous duty station, give your pet time to adapt. Cooler mornings might mean adjusting walk times, while shorter days could inspire a little more indoor play.
Above all, be patient. Just like us, pets need time to learn their new surroundings, meet the neighborhood squirrels, and figure out which sunny window is their new favorite nap spot.
