PCS travel with pets is already a whole adventure. You’re juggling bags, paperwork, snacks, kids, crates, directions, check-in times, and somehow your dog or cat still thinks the hotel room is the most exciting place they have ever seen....because it's new.
New smells. New sounds. New hallway. New carpet.
If you’re staying in hotels during a PCS move, a little pet etiquette can make the trip smoother for you, your pet, hotel staff, and everyone sleeping on the other side of the wall.
The first thing most owners forget? Your pet has no idea this is temporary. To them, this strange room is suddenly “home,” so setting up a familiar little space can help. Bring their bed, blanket, favorite toy, food, water bowl, and anything that smells like normal life. Even a small comfort zone in the corner can help them settle in faster.
It’s also a good idea to do a quick pet-proofing check when you walk in. Look for dropped food, cords, open trash cans, loose items, or anything your pet may decide is a snack, toy, or personal challenge. Hotel rooms are cleaned between guests, but pets are experts at finding the one thing everyone missed.
Another big one: noise. Dogs may bark at hallway sounds, elevators, rolling luggage, ice machines, or people walking past the door. Cats may hide, meow, or panic in a new space. Try turning on the TV, using a white noise app, or keeping your pet’s setup away from the door if possible.
Also please, for everyone’s sanity, do not leave your pet alone in the room unless the hotel allows it and your pet is calm enough to handle it. A dog barking nonstop in a hotel room is not exactly the welcome committee anyone asked for.
Potty breaks matter too. Take dogs out often, clean up every time, and know where the hotel’s pet relief area is before you urgently need it. For cats, set up the litter box somewhere easy to access but out of the way. A disposable litter tray or travel-friendly setup can make cleanup much easier.
Then there is the underrated travel essential: a good carrier or travel bag. Whether you have a dog or cat, having the right gear makes hotel stops, car rides, and quick transitions much less stressful. The Military Pet Club sweepstakes for a 2-in-1 dog or cat carrier is a fun one to keep an eye on if you’re planning pet travel. And for PCS families, the PCS with Pets sweepstakes for a $500 gift card and Purina travel bag is another helpful little travel bonus that fits right into move season. Just one of those things that makes you go, “Okay, actually, I could use that.”
The goal is not to be perfect. PCS travel is already a lot. The goal is to be prepared enough that your pet feels safe, your hotel stay goes smoothly, and nobody has to apologize to the front desk because someone’s dog tried to personally greet every guest on the third floor. A little planning goes a long way.
