Congratulations, you finally made it to your vacation rental. The car is unpacked...or at least everything important is. Your dog has already claimed the best spot on the couch, you're mentally calculating how many loads of laundry you'll have to do before the next leg of the trip, and all you really want is a hot shower and a cup of coffee.
Now after countless road trips and PCS moves with pets, many people discover that the first 15 minutes after walking through the front door can make or break the rest of the stay. Dogs have an incredible talent for finding the one thing they shouldn't, whether it's a forgotten chocolate bar in a welcome basket, an unsecured gate, or a TV remote that suddenly looks like the world's best chew toy.
That's why one quick walkthrough before letting the dogs explore has become a habit for so many families. It only takes about 15 minutes, but it can prevent everything from upset stomachs to runaway pups...and maybe even save that security deposit.
The Kitchen
For some reason, the kitchen always seems to be mission control for bad decisions. A quick scan of the countertops for food, medications, candy, or leftovers from previous guests only takes about 30 seconds. Thirty very important seconds. Skipping that step? Well...that's how an innocent little chocolate bar in a welcome basket suddenly becomes an all-hands-on-deck situation. One minute everyone is unloading the car. The next, someone is frantically Googling, "How much chocolate is too much chocolate for a 45-pound dog?" while another person is trying to remember where they packed the emergency vet information. Could that whole adventure have been avoided with a quick countertop sweep?
Absolutely. The dog, however, has no regrets.
While you're in the kitchen, take a peek under the sink, too. Cleaning supplies and an overflowing trash can can be just as tempting as whatever smells amazing on the counter. If dogs could read, they'd probably assume every welcome basket was left there specifically for them.

Before the zoomies begin, take one lap around the property. Check the gates. Test the latches. Look for gaps in the fence. Make sure screen doors actually close, and if there's a balcony, take a second look at the railings.
It might feel unnecessary...right up until your dog spots a squirrel that's apparently committed a personal offense. At that point, your peaceful vacation can turn into an unexpected neighborhood sprint faster than you can yell, "Come back!" Ask any military pet family who's moved a few times, I promise you it's always the gate you didn't check.
If there's one travel habit that earns its keep every single time, it's having a dedicated pet bag. Not somewhere in the trunk or buried under three suitcases. Not packed in the mystery tote labeled "Miscellaneous." Right where it can be grabbed the second everyone walks through the door: food, bowls, medications, leashes, treats, poop bags, and favorite toys all stay together. After an eight-hour drive, nobody wants to play a game of "Which box has the dog food?"
