Packing for a Fall Weekend

Last fall, we took our dog up for a weekend of hiking, coffee stops, and walking around a little mountain town where every other person seemed to have a dog with them. I wanted to keep the packing simple, but between his food, leash, water bowl, treats, and the things he needs after a muddy trail, there was more to bring than I expected. I packed his food and treats in the Purina travel bag, which made it much easier to keep everything together instead of digging through our other bags every time he needed something. I also brought his regular bowls, a water bottle for the drive and hikes, waste bags, his leash, his boots, and a towel for those inevitable muddy paws. His favorite blanket came along too, mostly because he settles down much faster when he has something that smells like home in the backseat.

Fall is also one of those seasons where I like to pack for two different kinds of weather. We had cool mornings on the trail, warmer afternoons, and one rainy walk that I definitely had not planned for. A light jacket for your dog, a towel, and an extra leash are small things that can save the day when you are spending most of the weekend outside.

If your pet is a cat, the packing can look a little different. A secure harness and leash can let an adventurous cat experience a quiet outdoor spot with you, while a bubble carrier can give them a safe way to look around during a stop somewhere scenic. I’d still bring their familiar blanket or toy so all the new sights and sounds don’t become too much.

For us, the best part of the weekend was actually the simplest: grabbing coffee after our morning hike and sitting outside while our dog watched people and other dogs walk by.
