10 Things You Should Know Before You Go Hiking with Your Dog

1.     Be Prepared

Be sure to do your research to make sure your pet is welcome where you want to hike and that the trail is suitable for your fur-baby. If the trails are rocky, or snowy, you might want to think about some booties for their paws.

2.     Stay Hydrated

Water is a must have for you and your furry friend. I always bring a collapsible bowl which I store in my Purina Travel Bag that you can enter in to win monthly!

3.     Be Sure to Have a Well-Fitted Collar or Harness

Having a well-fitted collar with emergency contact tags on your pet is a must. We always use a harness because our big dog pulls and it helps me keep him safe without pulling.

4.     Obey Leash Laws

As a part of being prepared, you will see if there are Leash Laws where you will be going. Be sure you follow in accordance with the area.

5.     Bring Treats and Food

Everyone needs a good snack on their hike (I am no exception). Be sure to bring extra food and treats for your pet (and all those non-furry hikers with you as well).

6.     Make Sure They Can Handle the Hike

Understand that you may be able to hike 8 miles, but a furry friend who only takes a few walks around the block may need to ease into hiking. Be sure you find a trail that’s mileage is within your pet’s limits. If your pet prefers more quiet surroundings, look for less crowded trails.

7.     Take Frequent Breaks

Pets get tired too! And much more quickly than you may think! Be sure to take frequent breaks for those water and snack stops. You can always just stop and sniff a tree or two if it suits them!

8.     Have A First Aid Kit

You should always have a First Aid Kit on hand and that it is able to service your pet as well. Make sure to have pet-friendly sunscreen and insect repellant, as well as bandages, gauze, swabs, etc.

9.     Clean Up After Your Dog

Waste bags are a must. Always clean up after your pet!

10.      Be Courteous to Other Hikers

While hiking, those with pets typically yield to oncoming hikers. Having your pet heel and waiting until they pass by is recommended.

Once you are ready for a hike, I have found a great program that you and your dog will love! The National Parks are amazing places for pets to visit with their families. Research the park you would like to visit and see if they take place in the B.A.R.K Ranger program. B.A.R.K. stands for:

·      Bag Your Pet’s Waste

·      Always Leash Your Pet

·      Respect Wildlife

·      Know Where You Can Go

After participating in this program, many parks have special patches or dog tags for our furry friends. For more information, check out their website (https://www.nps.gov/subjects/pets/be-a-bark-ranger.htm). Military members and their family can also get into these parks for free every year.
